Étienne Abassi (Conferences / Workshops / Sound Journeys) – (CA)
Étienne is an electronic music producer, DJ, and neuroscientist at McGill University’s Auditory Cognitive Sciences Laboratory (zlab.mcgill.ca). His hybrid career path brings together scientific research and musical creation in innovative formats, exploring the links between perception, rhythms, and low frequencies. Through lectures, workshops, and musical performances, he develops immersive and accessible formats where scientific rigor meets sonic experimentation. His projects aim to awaken both mind and body, offering the public a collective experience that connects the arts and sciences.
🧠 Scientific Conference for the General Public: “Brain, Bass, and Music” (1.5 hours)
This immersive and interactive scientific conference explores the role of repetitive rhythms and low frequencies in our musical perception, movement, and states of consciousness. Through a popular approach and live sound demonstrations, the audience is invited to discover how our brain processes music and rhythm, why low frequencies encourage movement, and how neuroscience research can inform musical composition, particularly in electronic music. The event concludes with a time for discussion with the audience, encouraging dialogue and reflection on how neuroscience can shed light on our relationship with music and inspire contemporary artistic creation.
🎛️ Interactive Workshop: “Introduction to Sound Synthesis and Music Production” (2 hours)
Accessible without prerequisites, this workshop allows all audiences to discover the basics of sound synthesis and electronic music production, in dialogue with scientific concepts and tools. Through an interactive demonstration, we will learn how to create sounds, build a rhythm, play with textures, and assemble a piece, while using scientific analysis tools such as the spectrogram to concretely visualize what we hear. Designed for a wide audience, this is a practical and accessible immersion into the world of electronic music production, manipulating the tools to understand how they work.
🎶Sound Journeys: Immersive DJ Sets (1-2 hours)
Artist Name: Tikshä / Tikin’ Dub
Through my sound journeys, I explore the power of bass and rhythm to transform listening into a collective experience: Lively grooves, electronic textures, and enveloping basslines invite the audience to dive into a festive and introspective musical experience, designed as a moment of sharing and pleasure. Two formats are offered, which can be combined within the same event: Tikshä (Techno / Acid / Trance), a journey with chiseled and hypnotic rhythms carried by deep bass that invites you to dance; and Tikin’ Dub (Dub / Reggae / Chill), an atmospheric and contemplative journey.
